Green Businesses

HEN welcomes the opportunity to connect the public with businesses that tread lightly on the environment. All businesses are reviewed by a committee before being included on the HEN website. Businesses are grouped into the following categories:

Sustainable Purchasing: businesses which provide products to assist people with the 3Rs (reducing, reusing, recycling), including:

  • rental shops
  • second-hand shops
  • refurbished or repurposed goods
  • waste management aids
  • energy or water conservation aids

or businesses which sell products which are one or more of:

  • organically grown
  • fair trade
  • locally produced
  • socially responsible
  • toxin-free alternatives

Environmental Services: businesses which provide services (rather than products) which:

  • are environmental consulting services
  • promote the 3Rs

Regardless of the products and services provided, a business may be included in one of the above categories if it puts a high priority on Green Business Practices, including:

  • energy conservation
  • water conservation
  • packaging reduction
  • pollution prevention
  • aggressive waste management
  • environmentally-friendly and/or socially responsible purchasing decisions
