Butternut is a member of the walnut family and in the past was an important source of nuts and wood. It is now designated by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as an endangered species because of butternut canker disease and is protected under the Species at Risk Act. Kathryn Harrison discusses the history of the butternut tree, the spread of the butternut canker disease and what is being done to help in the recovery of this fabulous tree. On the hike, learn to identify the butternut and the differences between it and other trees.
