On August 19th Canada's Environment Minister Peter Kent announced that the Government of Canada are taking steps to reduce emissions from the countries coal-fired electricity sector. They "recognize the potential for significant emissions reductions", and created new regulations applying to coal fired electricity generation units. They will be phasing out traditional coal-fired electricity generation to make way for new units. These new regulations are expected to cause a decline in the greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation, contributing to the countries goals of reducing emissions 17% by 2020.
